According to Gartner, “CIOs and IT leaders are struggling to find new opportunities to innovate in the organization. Gartner’s Cool Vendors research provides insight on how intriguing companies are investing for differentiation. How does Gartner identify Cool Vendors?

The Gartner Approach to Cool Vendors states that, “Gartner expert analysts use the following guidelines and approach to identify and research Cool Vendors. A vendor must be considered innovative, impactful or intriguing in either the products or the IT services sectors. Cool Vendors are not limited to technology coolness, however — coolness may also include services or unique business models.

Cool Vendors are also vetted for the following parameters:

  • The product or service offering needs to be publicly available for purchase at the point of submission for inclusion in a Cool Vendors report.
  • The vendor should be less than 10 years old. If a vendor has been around for 10 years or more, it is likely that either:
    • The vendor is no longer innovative and intriguing.
    • The vendor’s product or service never achieved the impact to be considered cool.
  • The vendor’s annual revenue must be less than $100 million.
  • Subsidiaries of major vendors may not be considered unless they are minority-owned entities of the major vendor.” 1

Can a company apply or nominate itself to be a Gartner Cool Vendor?

No, companies cannot apply or nominate themselves to be Cool Vendors. Instead, nominations come directly from Gartner analysts who are experts in specific markets and the vendor landscape.
