Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is a managed Kubernetes service that allows you to easily run Kubernetes on AWS without having to install, operate, and maintain your own Kubernetes control plane or nodes. The solution also orchestrates the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.
Setting up an EKS cluster involves several steps, including creating a VPC, installing and configuring the AWS CLI and Kubernetes CLI, creating an IAM role for EKS, creating the EKS cluster, and then configuring the kubectl command line utility for the cluster.
EKS integrates with several AWS services, such as IAM for access control, CloudWatch for logs and monitoring, Auto Scaling groups for node scaling, Elastic Load Balancing for distributing network traffic, and RDS for database services, among others.
With Amazon EKS, you pay for AWS resources (e.g., EC2 instances or EBS volumes) you create to store and run your applications. You also pay a per-hour charge for each Amazon EKS cluster that you create – which is $0.10 per hour per cluster.
You can use Amazon CloudWatch and AWS X-Ray for monitoring application performance and debug issues. Such tools give you visibility into resource usage and can help identify problems in your application stack. Additionally, EKS integrates with the AWS App Mesh and the Envoy Proxy for a service mesh, which provides observability, network traffic management, and control for services.
Stop wasting engineer time – cut your cloud bill with automation
Never let optimizing your EKS costs become a drag – automation can take entire groups of tasks off your team’s plate.
